After a brilliant 5+ seasons with @pfanewbury the time has come for me to step down and focus a little bit more on clinical work and some other work related bits

Massive thank you to the boss @garyclifford1 for letting me experience a football background which, professionally, I'd never been exposed to. A lot was learnt in those times. Met some awesome staff, great bunches of players year on year and plenty of bags of sweets consumed in dugouts.

Had a sudden realisation about a reasonably big milestone in my Sports Therapy journey.

The start of August marked my 2 year anniversary working out of CrossFit Freesol as a Sports Therapist 🎂 big thanks to Tim&Cara for letting me run with the idea in March 2022 and now to Kieron for continuing to house my practice

Throughout the week you'll also find me at Newbury RFC, City of Oxford College, Procision Football Academy & Pangbourne College. However, it's been amazing to hold a room, working alongside some great people doing some wicked things

Wicked fun to be asked down to Kennet School last week to speak to their Athlete Development Programme group all about Sports Therapy, injuries, prevention & why it's a good idea to keep on top of body health starting from a young age.

Rather than a sciencey, heavy duty blog, this is more of a relaxed view with all things Sports Therapy. We won't be winning any literary awards and I apologise to any former English teachers for the lack of flowing prose

Followed up with rugby training tonight with the Newbury boys focusing on grappling and wrestling in preparation for going back to full contact

Today was spent pitchside covering the @htfc_academy trials day. So good to be back pitchside with my wee medical bag. Looking forward to working with the newer members of the squad when they join the programme in August

Tomorrow: clinics in Hungerford & Newbury. Lovely range of shoulders, knees and hip to see followed with prehab with the boys at rugby in the evening

Welcome to 2021 and with the impending sense of deja vu, I will be stopping all face to face appointments

As with anything, safety is paramount and as that great philosopher Kylie Minogue once sang, "better the devil you know"

However I will be available for any appointments virtually and I'm to run on a 'Pay What You Can' basis. This is so that anyone struggling with finances can still access help is required

Conversely, if people do still need to see someone face to face, I will quite happily give you the details of some wicked good Osteopaths, Chiropractors & Physios. (I mean how they are still seeing appointments is a debate for another day however)

So for now, it's back to reading some more and getting tucked into some online CPD I've had sitting for months

If I could see recipes and photos of creations OTHER than banana bread, I'd be most appreciative

With the good news that gyms, sports clubs and fitness facilities are reopening, people will be going back to their pre-lockdown bits of activity. For me, I'm looking forward to boxing fitness classes, touch rugby and some golf (I'd have 100% missed that putt in the photo by the way)

Realistically after having about a month off, despite the best intentions of home exercise, runs etc, it's unlikely people will be fully "match fit". Whether you're a footballer, gym goer, a runner, netballer, hocker player, exercise classer, weekend warrior, these may help in order to reduce the risk of injury:

1. Warm Up!

We're all guilty of just doing a few static stretches and off we go, maybe throw in some deep heat spray too. Instead warm up by performing movements similar to what you're about to do in the sessions (squat, lunge, hinge, rotate etc) and also look at bringing up the heart rate

2. Build up gradually

For example, the runners - increase your minutes and distance incrementally. The gym go-ers, start with a comfortable weight, sets and reps and look to gradually increase. This is the perfect time for people to really nail form and technique

3. Recovery

If you follow the main core pillars (HYDRATION, NUTRITION, SLEEP) then you won't go far wrong. Additions like foam rolling, ice, heat, massage guns MAY help but possibly only in short spells and with limited effects

4. Niggles

Niggles are very common and normally it's your body's way of saying to slow down, deload and reevaluate your sessions. It's easier to address the niggle at its earlier stage rather than ignoring it (we've all done that too!) and letting the niggle develop into something potentially more problematic

5. Go and enjoy it!

Enjoy the benefits of your activity from the social side, the physical side and mental side

However this can be done as long as ALL treatments are reasoned to be necessary - this is to be determined on a case-by-case basis by yours truly.

There are a few caveats attached:

✅ Face to face appointments are deemed necessary IF they "prevent the escalation of a musculoskeletal condition, prevent pain, reduce symptoms & disability that can affect a person's daily living

✅ Treatment times face to face still to be reduced - I will be continuing with a max treatment time of 45 mins

✅ Each person (regardless of being a new or existing client) must have a video/telephone session prior to each session

❌ Mobile treatments are not permitted

❌ Treatments that are used for "maintenance or relaxation"

I will be contacting those affected and arrange alternatives

I really am pleased that Sports Therapy is finally being recognised for the skills we have and not just lazily put in the same bracket as "massage parlours". My fellow therapists and I are way more qualified to do more than just rub your gen.......eral areas.

I hope everyone has a top weekend and I will be raring to go from Monday

As you can appreciate, this is a very hard time for me and for all my fellow small businesses so I would like to thank everyone for their support since re-opening in the Summer. Pre Covid, this group run by Gary Amor (one of the nicest blokes you could meet) was going great guns with several classes a week with mixed group and ladies only sessions. They're back going small group, outdoor fitness sessions (no boxing bits). I did one on Monday night and it was brutal.
